TURNING A PASSION FOR SPORTS TO GOOD USE
Malini has been a keen sportswoman from childhood. Growing up playing racket sports, she excelled at Badminton and played for her school at regional level. Taking up running at college, she enjoys long distances and has run several marathons and triathlons (run, bike, swim) for charity.
She has been a keen swimmer since childhood and turned her passion for the sport into the unique Teach A Girl To Swim campaign which seeks to save lives, empower girls and tackle climate change. Kicked off at the United Nations disaster summit in Mexico in 2017, the campaign addresses the hidden global epidemic of drowning and connects it with climate change, female empowerment and disaster risk reduction. The campaign has a number of high-profile backers and advocates basic swim skills and water safety education for girls and women, working in partnership with leading drowning prevention organisations around the world.
From 2017-2019, Malini swam 500+ kilometres around the world to bring attention to the drowning crisis and urge leaders to act. This included several swim marathons (10km) in China, Brazil, Bangladesh, Thailand, India and Philippines.
She has also swum the iconic River Dart 10km on three occasions for charity and as a 3-time swimmer received the Dart golden cap.
She enjoys triathlon and has completed Challenger Ironman 70.3, also known as a Half Ironman, consisting of a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1mile run in that order, a total of 70.3 miles. Her ambition is to one day complete the full Ironman Triathon, which consists of a 2.4-mile (3.9 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.2 km) bicycle ride and a marathon 26.22-mile (42.2 km) run completed in that order, a total of 140.6 miles (226.3 km).
